Titanic Trail - Cobh Ireland Walking Tour

Spike Island

In the middle of Cork Harbour and at the centre of a melting pot of ecclesiastical, military, social, economic and maritime history lies Spike Island.

This heritage treasure has witnessed and been a part of many of Irelands major historical themes. The monastic period, the Viking raids, the Norman conquest, global military conflicts and the development of transatlantic shipping are all linked to the steadfast strategic position of the Island.

Not least among its treasures is the intact star shaped military fortress that dominates the only entrance to the harbour and played a significant role in the defence of Britain’s western approaches. It is only after several years of campaigning by Michael Martin and others that this historical legacy survived.
