This image depicts the town of Cobh in mourning for the victims of the Titanic and was taken by Francis Browne, studying to be a Jesuit priest at the time. This master photographer with an nephew of the local bishop, Robert Browne, who had given him an unusual present: a ticket for the first legs of the maiden voyage of the Titanic, sailing from Southampton to Cherbourg and then on to Queenstown (Cobh), Co Cork, Ireland. The Fr. Brown collection is the only visual chronicle of photographs of the Titanic as she left Queenstown to cross the Atlantic.
